IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES
An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants to provide a more secure fit . A conventional complete denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants. An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn't have any remaining teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants.
Implants are posts that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw. Implants can also help reduce bone loss.
Implant-supported dentures are most often made for the lower jaw as conventional dentures tend to be less stable there. Usually, a complete upper denture is quite secure on its own and doesn't require the extra stability offered by implants. However, you can receive an implant-supported denture in either the upper or lower jaw.
You should remove an implant-supported denture daily to clean the denture and gum area. However, there are also fixed (permanent) implant-supported dentures that are not removable, except by your dentist or oral surgeon. Make sure to ask about the different options during your initial consultation.
Many patients find that implant-supported dentures are more comfortable and secure than conventional dentures. However, not everyone is a candidate for implants. Patients must be in good health and have enough bone to support the implants. Ask your dentist if you are a good candidate for implant- supported denture.
